Playgroup Derby Party
When I was in high school, I couldn't wait to run off to college and get out of Kentucky. Now the farther I move from the Bluegrass state, the more I miss it!
So...welcome to the party, y'all!
The Menu: mutton/turkey/ham mini sandwiches, burgoo, fruit kabobs, coleslaw, hashbrown casserole, derby pie (and mini pies), banana pudding (and mini trifle puddings), lemonade, bottled beverages, and mint juleps (of course!).
The "Jockey Quarters" station was set up outside with the kiddos in mind. Each little "jockey" took home a stick horse and jockey hat. There were also treats ("Salty"--Ritz Bits, Goldfish, crackers and "Sweet"-- yogurt covered raisins, Teddy Grahams, fruit chews, and animal crackers) and sidewalk chalk.
I won't name any names, but one little girl refused to wear her Derby hat during the party. She wears a hat practically every day, but on Derby Day? Forget it. Her buddy Maddox, however, was all about wearing hats. He sported two jockey hats--backward! It's the cool way to wear them, in case you didn't know. ;)
Even though Miss Aubrey refused to wear her hat, she was such a precious hostess. She absolutely loved passing out the stick horses to her friends.
And Daniel was a huge help during the party. It was so funny to see a guy, who has never had so much as a drop of bourbon in his life, whipping out Mint Juleps behind the bar like he was Tom Cruise in Cocktail.
With all the hubbub of kiddos running around, if Daniel hadn't yelled out, "They're playing My Old Kentucky Home!" I seriously think we would have missed the actual race. We all scurried inside and enjoyed the most exciting 2 minutes in sports. It was hilarious to see how the little ones really got into the race too. They were pointing, cheering, and shouting, "Horse! Horse! Horse!"
Before the race started, everyone drew a horse to cheer for from the "Pick Your Winner" stand. Shayna's horse was the winner, so she won the movie Seabiscuit, which as luck would have it, is one of her favorite movies!
After the race, it was back to playing!

These pictures below make me smile: (From Left to Right) 1) My sweet friend Jennifer -- she makes every party fabulous! 2) Sweet Lauren saw everyone standing in front of the "Derby" letters for pictures, and she decided she wanted to have her picture taken too! 3) My friend and neighbor Katie came over for the festivities. I should mention she doesn't have any children yet, and I really hope this party didn't convince her to postpone her future family plans! haha!
Throughout the party, Aubrey would come up to Daniel and me and give us the biggest leg hugs and then dash off to play some more. She was so happy having all her friends over.
So, I am think we just might need to make this an annual event!

The Kentucky Derby is one of those things that pulls at my heartstrings each year. I decided this time around, I'd bring a little "Derby" to Oklahoma!
I thought it would be a fun event to bring the Playgroup families together. The mommies and babies/toddlers all know each other so well, but the daddies seem to get left out. I figured if you have a TV paired with an exciting sporting event that happens once a year, the guys would be on board. Sure enough, we had a full house!

Our Dandy Derby Weekend!
Ahhh...Derby Weekend...
Being a Kentucky native, there was always a party to go to during the Derby. Well, this year, we had our own Derby Party here in Cincinnati with Grammy and Pop Pop.
The menu consisted of some traditional "Bluegrass" items: mutton sandwiches, burgoo (soup), cheeseball, banana pudding, and Derby Pie (of course!). The only thing we forgot were the mint juleps!
For those of you reading this who are not from Kentucky, the mutton and burgoo probably look and sound disgusting to you. But oh, if you've grown up on these yums yums like me, there's nothing quite better. Especially when you've moved away.

{Derby Pie: chocolate, coconut, pecan yummy-ness}
Our little jockey woke up (in her Derby jammies) and was more interested in the moving boxes than the horses...
Before the Derby Party, Grammy and Pop Pop babysat little Aubrey while Daniel and I went to a movie.
Can you guess which one we went to see?
I'll give you a hint...
Once we returned home from the movie (Wolverine, in case you didn't guess it...haha), Aubrey was dressed and ready for the races. Excitement filled the air!
