Any time I hear the word "pecan" I think of
this scene in
When Harry Met Sally.
I just realized I used a movie quote for the last post too.
I'll try to stop.
Anyway...
While we were in Kentucky, Zubie invited us over to pick pecans.
This was the
same day as the apple orchard excursion, so we were definitely in the "picking" mode.
We even had Aunt Mel and Tootie join us since they missed out on the morning fun.
Zubie always has the neatest tools -- she had a pecan picker-upper (that's the technical name...) for each of us. It was like a tennis or golf ball hopper, but for pecans. See?
It was fun searching for the pecans -- kinda like a camouflage Easter egg hunt.
After picking up quite a few, Zubie wanted to show Aubrey exactly what was inside the pecan shell...
Aubrey even tried her first pecan.
Which, as it turns out, was her last.
And speaking of wanting to gag...
My sister snagged my camera, snapped this photo below, and immediately announced, "Perfect -- I got all your butts!" (and almost *too* much of mine...nice.)
(Note that all of us with the pecan picker-uppers are hunched over,
while Zubie's the only without one and is standing upright.)
By the way, remind me to never let my sister take my camera again...
And just to explain something -- I didn't have a hairband, and it was super windy that day.
I used the scarf to keep my hair from whipping me in the face. It worked, however ridiculous I looked.
Anyway, after Aubrey totally dominated in finding pecans (we decided she was better at it because she's lower to the ground), she took off with Aunt Mel (who
still had my camera, I might add).
Hey Aubrey, with all that energy you have, why don't you pick up any spare branches and twigs you can find?
Two minutes later...
Ha, just kidding.
We ended up with quite an impressive basket of pecans once it was all said and done.
By the way, the minute you decide, "Okay, I'm done looking for pecans..." you'll find a hundred.
As the sun started to fade Aubrey announced, "This is the best day ever!"
And it kinda was.
