The Back to School Shoppe

I have a post in the works to discuss the current status of Kindergarten, but today I'd rather travel back to a time that was filled with tear-free excitement and anticipation.

The day before school started, I stocked a Back to School Shoppe at our house.

I gathered all of Aubrey's school supplies, miscellaneous art supplies, party fans, and a mini shopping cart for the set-up.

Before the store "opened" -- I read off the school supply list to Aubrey and had her make her own list (she drew pictures of the items).

(This photo doesn't show the entire list.)

Aubrey grabbed her purse and some play money, and waited for the stock-boy / bagger to open the store. :)

Oh the indescribable joy of buying school supplies!

Aubrey absolutely loved filling the shopping cart with the items and then marking them off her list.

Once she had everything, it was time to ring it all up! The total came to $29, and she decided to pay with her debit card (wink wink). When I asked for a form of identification, she gave me her library card. (I love this girl so much.)

After she paid, she went to the table to label all her items before putting them in her backpack. I had Sharpies and stickers with her initials.

I think we'll need to do this every year before school starts! It was so fun!

Shamian Island and Guangzhou Zoo

Yesterday we traveled with our group to Shamian Island. This used to be the place adoptive families came for their Consulate appointment, but a few years ago the Consulate moved to Guangzhou. There are still lots of souvenir shops and restaurants, so it's a fun place to spend a few hours.

The shop owners are a bit much, though. They are well versed in hassling Americans to buy their stuff.
Ugh, it got so annoying...
Come in, come in! What you looking for?
Ah, you need get daughter this! Very important!
I give you good price. Ya, good quality.
Handmade, very nice.
Ah, you so pretty!

Look what we found amongst the, uh...junk *stuff*.

For lunch we ate at Lucy's. It has American food (don't judge).
Mina ate a hamburger and fries.
We also had packed a kiwi, so it wasn't all bad! :)

Shamian Island reminds me of Savannah or Charleston.
It felt very Southern...of course, this didn't hurt the elegance and charm...

This morning we went to the Guangzhou Zoo.
The picture below is my all time favorite.
See the cute little one in the mirror peeking over the seat to see the peacock?!

I'm pretty sure this was her first zoo experience -- it was precious watching her see all the animals.
I would say the pandas were her favorite.
Oh, and today was the first day Mina rode in a stroller!
My back sang the Hallelujah chorus the entire morning! :)

We went to a lunch with the group after the zoo, and I'd say Miss Mina ate more than anyone!
At one point she had a huge chunk of bean sprouts hanging out of her mouth with a big cheesy smile.
It was hilarious!
I hope she's this good of an eater when we get home!
(Which is in THREE days! Not that I'm counting or anything. Okay I am.)

Ah, Love...

Today marks one week with our sweet and spicy Mina.
I am amazed at how far we've come in seven short days.
We've gone from scared cries to giggly smiles.
I can't begin to explain how incredible it's been to watch her blossom this week.
Miraculous.

Today we went shopping with Ann at Red Thread. She's the one we used to send Mina care packages while we waited. She was awesome! We took a taxi and drove quite a ways away from our hotel. She knew exactly where to go to get some nice, authentic souvenirs. She was hard-core with bartering and would just walk out of shops if they weren't budging on their price. I shudder to think of the money we would have spent had it not been for her!

Here's Miss Mina at the pearl market...
Hand-picked, hand-strung pearls for our precious daughter to wear on her wedding day.
Don't want to show more pics from our shopping day...it would ruin some surprises! :)

To give a little update on how our girl is doing...
She is still my constant companion -- of all the families here adopting, I think she's the only one who will not sit in a high chair during meals. Must be in my lap at all times. I'm completely fine with it even though she swipes most of the food off my plate...

She still will not let Daniel hold her, but she's getting better about other things. For instance, she'll now eat something he offers her, and she'll play with him on the floor for a little bit. Tonight while I was giving her a bath, she kept calling out "BABA!" (that's Daddy in Chinese) at him and smiling. I think it won't be long before she finally caves and lets him scoop her up.

Putting her to bed is one of my favorite times of day.
She is just so darn happy!
I say a prayer, sing her a song, and then we have the sweetest little time together.
She'll be jabbering to me while rubbing my cheek...ah, makes me melt.
Then she gets tickled about who knows what and just giggles and giggles.
I'm now convinced sound machines should really offer the "baby giggles" option in addition to the rain, waterfall, rain forest  and white noise features.
I only know how to say three things in Chinese: Hi, Thank you, and I love you.
So, when she's starting to get really sleepy, we give Eskimo kisses and I tell her over and over in English and Chinese I love you, Mina...I love you, Mina...
Tonight right as she was about to drift off to sleep, she took out her pacifier, said "Mama" and gave me a big slobbery kiss.
It was the most precious thing in the world.

She is doing so well, especially considering everything in her little world has completely and drastically changed.
I am in awe of her.
She is absolutely incredible.

From A to Zulily

If you have children, obsess over cute kid clothes, and love a good bargain -- you've probably heard of Zulily.

If not, I'll give you the quick rundown: Zulily is an online store that offers daily sales on a range of things such as clothing, shoes, accessories, home goods/decor, games/books (all for babies, toddlers, kids, and moms). Members get up to 90% off the retail prices. Oh, and it's free to join -- all you have to do is enter your name, email, and a password.

Sounds easy enough, right?

Well...let me give you this warning:
Zulily is extremely DANGEROUS.

If you struggle with impulse shopping -- do NOT become a member.

There are only a certain number of items in stock, so you gotta make quick decisions if you see something you want. In five minutes, the item could very well be sold out.

There is a wide variety of brands -- some really trendy, some really traditional, some really cute, and some really ugly. And, for all my Southern Smock Addicts: you need an additional level of warning. The site features LOTS of smocked clothing each week. Try to avoid bankruptcy. Please.

I am a conservative shopper/spender, and Daniel had to stage an intervention after a few months of my membership.

Because I'm now at a "healthy" place when it comes to shopping on Zulily, I feel the need to pass along my acquired wisdom.

Here are my 5 Rules of Zulily:

1. I ask myself the following questions before completing an order:
  • Is this something Aubrey needs or something I just want to buy her because it's so freaking cute?
  • Does Aubrey already have something like this in her closet?
  • Is this style something that would even look good on Aubrey?
  • Will I have to buy something else (hairbow/shoes/leggings) to complete the outfit?
  • Will I have to iron this after washing it? (That's usually the final deal-breaker for me.)

2. Don't forget you pay shipping costs, which is usually a minimum of $6. So, that adorable pink ruffled top marked down from $42 to $19.99 is actually over $25 once you check out. For me, it's always hard to pay more than $20 for something that has a 92% chance of getting stained within the first 3 hours of wear and will more than likely be worn a maximum of 2-3 times before it's too small.

3. From my experience, if I order something on December 5th, I won't actually receive it until January 5th. It's typically a full month of waiting. Keep this in mind when buying seasonal items* or items intended for someone's birthday. I ordered a precious Easter dress for Aubrey last year that came 9 days AFTER Easter. I also bought a cute cupcake necklace for one of Aubrey's friends that arrived one week POST birthday party. Not good.
(*Before Christmas, there were items marked with a guarantee to make it before Dec. 25th.)

4. If you aren't familiar with a brand, be careful of sizing. I've had two items (at least) that arrived and didn't fit Aubrey properly. It's one of those things that I would have known if I was at a store looking at the item, but online -- you just have to make a click of faith. This stinks, especially because you can't return these items. Big time bummer. Also, check the brands to see if your local stores carry it. One of the first purchases I made was an outfit that I later found on JC Penney's clearance rack. Nothing against JCP, but I felt like I had been duped. The outfit online looked so boutique-y on Zulily, yet there it was dangling from a broken plastic hanger with a marked down price of $7.99. Lesson learned.

5. Budget for it. I allow myself one purchase a month, and the whole order must be under $50. This way, I have to really think about the purchase before ordering. Is it really worthy of the one-time monthly allowance? Because of this, there have been months when I didn't buy anything. And that is absolutely FINE. Aubrey has never not had something to wear.

Okay, I think that's all the wisdom I have to depart.

Now, I'd like to end this post by giving back...

With a $50 voucher to the personalized stationery site: ErinCondren.com
The site offers lots of "organizational" items that would be a great way to start off the New Year -- especially if one of your resolutions is to stay on top of things!

I purchased this voucher on Zulily awhile back and realized I absolutely do not need a single thing from the website. Oh I want practically every single thing, but I don't NEED it. (I have a very deep and strange addiction to all things stationery.) So, I want to offer it to one of you! There's all kinds of cuteness that can be personalized with name and/or photos: gift labels, calendars, journals, address books, gift wrap, invitations/announcements, We've Moved cards, lucite trays, growth charts, book plates and more.
Here are just a few pics to see a sample of the goods...

 {Gift Wrap}

{Invitations}

{Address Book}
{Family Calendar}
{Jumbo Calendars}
{Life Planner}
[More info on the life planner. It's pretty spiffy -- watch the clip.]

{Sorority themed items/stationery}

Okay, I must stop before I delete this post and order one of everything on that darn site!
So...
Just leave a comment, and you're entered!
(Make sure I know how to contact you in the event your name is drawn!)
I'll announce the winner on Friday, January 13th
Hopefully it'll turn that unlucky day into something fun!
Good luck!

Who Is This Girly Girl?

It's not unusual for Miss Aubrey to choreograph and perform her own song / dance number.

But when it comes to most girly things, she just not that into it.
No real interest in princesses.
She's Super Aubrey to the Rescue!
She has never in her life even feigned the slightest interest in "make-up" or anything remotely close to that category. (Well, she likes chapstick, but that doesn't really count.) Anytime she walks in while I'm putting on my make-up, she bolts out the door if I even try to swipe her with my blush brush.

So you can imagine my surprise this morning when -- out of nowhere -- she announced that she wanted me to paint her toenails. And fingernails. Oh my...

Now, I think my Aubrey is perfect in every way. But her feet?
Well, they aren't exactly her beauty trademark.
(Plus, it's super challenging to paint the toenails of a wiggly tot.)

But her hands? Well, those are gorgeous.
Even in a heated game of Feeding Froggies.

When Aubrey woke up from her afternoon nap, I thought I'd see if the "girly girl" was still there.
"Aubrey, would you like to go shoe shopping with me?"
"Sure!"
We were out the door, lickety-split.

I couldn't believe my eyes at the first shoe she picked.
Not a pair for me, but for her...
Let's take a closer look...

And once she figured out the shoes didn't come in her size, she was onto perusing purses.

Wha?

Now, Aubrey...I have to ask...
What are the chances of you letting me paint your toenails and fingernails again any time soon?
Or even being up for an afternoon of shoe/purse shopping?

That's what I thought.
It's okay.
Really.
While today was fun, I am already looking forward to tomorrow, which I'm sure will be filled with our usual daily activities: pretending to be robots/repairing pretend robots, building Lego rocket-ships, playing endless rounds of hide-and-seek, discussing (again) the implications of Pluto being classified as a "dwarf planet", and crunching numbers on your trusty calculator.

I love you, Aubrey Ruth.
You're the best.
Girly or not.

Little (Shoe) Shop of Horrors

Today Aubrey and I ventured out to the mall. Our mission was clear: we needed a pair of shoes for our newest little walker, and we were going to do it rite. Stride "Rite", that is.

I had no idea that upon entering this store, Little Miss Aubrey would proceed to have a full blown meltdown. She was doing fine as we looked at shoes, but the minute the kind saleswoman (Alisha) went to measure her footsies...it was downhill from there. I'm not sure if the measuring device was cold or what, but Aubrey let everyone know within a 5 store radius that she was not pleased.

Oh, it gets worse...

As sweet Alisha finished measuring the second foot (bless her soul -- I was fine with just one foot measured, but she insisted we do both) and started to stand back up, Aubrey grabbed -- with both hands, mind you -- Alisha's hair. Imagine a pit bull's locked jaw on some defenseless animal. That was my "sweet, little" girl's hands on this poor lady's head.

Finally, we were able to pry Aubrey's death claws out of Alisha's hair, and she went to the back to retrieve the appropriately sized shoes. I'm sure she was thinking the whole time, "I don't get paid enough to do this!"

Amazingly, with a smile, Alisha came back out with the shoes. Aubrey had calmed down, so she wanted to put the shoes on our little "pit bull" to make sure they fit. At this point, I wasn't sure if the lady was a Saint or merely a glutton for punishment. Apparently it was the latter, because within seconds Aubrey was back to meltdown mode.

After apologizing profusely, I told Alisha to just go ahead and ring it up. If the shoes didn't fit, we'd simply bring them back.

The minute we rolled out of the store, the tears magically stopped. I pulled Aubrey to the side and asked her what in the world happened in there.

She refused to look at me.

I told her Jesus sees her act like that and He doesn't like when she behaves in such a way. I told her that this was supposed to be a fun day, and I hoped that our next shoe shopping trip would be a better experience for us all.

She finally started to come around...

And then started giving rather angelic kisses to the sky. Maybe to Jesus??

Once we were home, we pulled the shoes out of the cutest, tiniest, littlest box to try on. They fit beautifully!

And then came the real test:

Success! Aubrey practically ran circles around the backyard!

Goodness, this girl is a handful! :)
